Dear Hawthorne Families,

Today we learned that the New Mexico Public Education Department has denied our plan to restructure and redesign Hawthorne Elementary School. Instead, the state has ruled that we must “champion and provide choice” for the school’s students and families.

What this means is that we are to provide our families with information on other school options for their children by hosting school choice expos, providing a list of other schools that Hawthorne students may attend, sending weekly school choice communications to families and providing transportation for students who choose to go to another school.

We are carefully reviewing these conditions to determine if they are feasible and in the best interest of our students, teachers and staff. We still believe that the plan we submitted, which was developed with input from teachers, staff and families like yours, best reflects the passion, dedication and commitment we have for this school. That plan, among other things, called for more rigorous education that centers on the needs of students, both academically and emotionally; a well-rounded education that focuses not just on math and language arts, but also on social studies, physical education and the arts; and extra daily learning time to help students apply core knowledge to real-world enriching activities.

It was our hope that we could work with the New Mexico Public Education Department and Secretary Designate Christopher Ruszkowski to implement More Rigorous Intervention (MRI) plan for Hawthorne that reflects the wishes of its families and community.

Please know that we are working to make sure your child has a place at Hawthorne Elementary School. We will continue to keep you informed as we continue through this process.
